Brief History

Creation of the SBSP

The São Paulo Botany Society (SBSP) arised from São Paulo Sectional of the Sociedade Botânica do Brasil (Brazil Botany Society-SBB), According the Dr Gil Martins Felippe description, Founder President in 1981, the São Paulo state botanics, very interested in Botany, and the São Paulo Sectional associates from SBB are convened na assembly in the Botany Institute of São Paulo to discuss SBB juridic aspects, as well as to analyze the future of the São Paulo Sectional of the SBB and the possibility to create a new society. To solve the absence of the SBB register like legal person, the idea suggested by lawyers and auditors, consulted in season, was the creation of one São Paulo Society, legalized under the Revista Brasileira de Botânica responsibility. The original idea was to create one São Paulo Society affiliated to Brazilian Federation of the Botany Societies. This Federation would be the old SBB. According this proposal, each state will have one Botany state society affiliated to the Federation. The first step woul be the creation of the São Paulo Society and, after, the dissolution of the São Paulo Sectional and the transfer of the Revista Brasileira de Botânica to the new society freshly founded.

So, the assembly performed in May 18, 1981, was officially founded the Sociedade Botânica de São Paulo. All botanics present in the assembly elected for unanimity Gil Martins Felipe as President, and Neusa Diniz da Cruz as Vice-President, whose mandate finished in December 31, 1982. This assembly elected also for unanimity the Administration Council members: Dr. Sonia Machado de Campos Dietrich, Dr. Ivany Ferraz M. Válio and Dr. João Semir, nominated to the period that would finish on november 1981; Dr. Ingrid Yasbeck Assad Ludwigs, Dr. Yara Struffaldi de Vuono and Dr. Alcides R. Teixeira, nominated to the period that would finish on november 1982; Dr. Rita de Cássia Figueiredo Ribeiro, Da. Maria das Graças Lapa Wanderley and Dr. Gilda M. de Fazio until November 1983.

During the Assembly performed on June 17, 1981, was ellected and approved, for majority, the dissolution of the São Paulo Sectional of the SBB. This moment was the end of the São Paulo Sectional of the SBB and the begining of the Sociedade Botânica de São Paulo. Some botanics made few initiatives to soften the problems created with the creation of SBSP and the dissolution of São Paulo Sectional of the SBB, but without sucess. In August 14, 1981, the SBSP obtained the register of the mark Revista Brasileira de Botânica/Brazilian Journal of Botany, with the INPI (Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial / International Institute of the Industrial Property). Since that time, the Journal is SBSP property.

After its foundation, the SBSP continued its administrative life by sucession of different directions, keeping the Journal like its main column and, today yet, survive and intend to be one Society more and more strong, active and with high national and international visibility, always keeping the Journal that is now named Brazilian Journal of Botany and one mundial reference in the Brazilian and Mondial Botany.

Creation of the Revista Brasileira de Botânica / Brazilian Journal of Botany

According the description of Dr Gil Martins Felippe, during 1976 Dr Walter Handro and Dr Eurico Cabral de Oliveira, both belong of the Botany Departament of the Biosciences Institute of the University of São Paulo (USP), after many idea exchanges, they concluded that there was the necessity of one Brazilian Scientific Journal with high level to publish the Botany papers, opened to researchers and disconnected with oficials institutions.

To discuss the matter and the continuity of the work, they decide to talk to Dr. Sonia M.C. Dietrich and Dr. Therezinha Sant’Anna Melhem, both belong to the São Paulo Botanical Institute, beyond Dr Gil M. Felippe from State University of Campinas (Unicamp). After the preliminary reunion, for Dr Gil M. Felippe suggestion, Dr Peter Gibbs, from St Andrews University but working in Unicamp in this time, started to participate of the staff. Some reunions were realized to discuss the provisory Journal Regiment, the named Revista Brasileira de Botânica / Braziian Journal of Botany. At the same time, several evaluations were made to decide the way to publish and the Journal financial maintenance, if by its idealizers, by one citizen society, or one scientific society. In this occasion, Dr Sonia Dietrich, as São Paulo Sectional of SBB Vice Director, remembered the possibility that this sectional to buy this idea and support legally the journal publishing.

So, on September 26, 1976, during the Ordinary General Assembly of the São Paulo Sectional of SBB, it was created the Revista Brasileira de Botânica and the journal idealizers were indicated as the first Editorial Board.  According to the Journal Regiment, the first Editor-in-Chief would be the São Paulo Sectional Director of SBB, in others words Dr Nanuza Luiza de Menezes from the Botany Departament of the São Paulo University (USP). The 1 and 2 volumes of the journal were published in 1978, largely, with the financial support of the FAPESP (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo) that implicated in the high quality of the Editorial Board members.

Along of these years, the Revista Brasileira de Botânica / Brazilian Journal of Botany keeps its quality and reputation, by the work, dedication and effort of the different Editor-in-Chiefs and sequential members of the Editorial Board. So, today is possible to say, with pride, that all efforts were celebrated with the international publishing of the Brazilian Journal of Botany entirely in English by Springer Publisher and, actually, with Impact Factor 1.385.

The SBSP thanks the colaboration of the wishful Prof. Dr Gil Martins Felippe, that contributed with the present abstract of the Brazilian Journal of Botany history.
